The Tuareg are a nomadic Berber people from the southern Sahara, known for their rich poetic tradition, unique writing system, and centuries-old traditions of trade, camel caravans, and craftsmanship. They are often called “the knights of the desert” or “the blue people” because of their indigo-dyed clothing and turbans.

Renowned for their leatherwork and especially their beautiful silver jewellery, the Tuareg create pieces rich in symbolism. The famous Tuareg crosses are protective amulets representing the four directions of the compass and are traditionally given to young men as they enter adulthood.

The jewellery in our shop is handcrafted by the cooperative Tagai de l’Aïr, a group of 21 Tuareg silversmiths from Niger. Through their artistry, they preserve an important cultural heritage while creating sustainable livelihoods in a region affected by conflict and declining tourism.

Each piece carries the beauty of tradition, the skill of generations, and the story of the people who created it.
